Why Subject Selection Matters More Than You Think

Your Year 12 ATAR subject choices don’t just determine what you study — they directly influence your final ATAR score through a process called scaling. The SCSA curriculum offers a broad range of ATAR courses, and understanding how they interact is key to making a smart decision.

Many students pick subjects based purely on interest, which is important, but ignoring scaling and prerequisite requirements can leave you locked out of university pathways later. The best strategy balances what you enjoy, what you’re good at, and what will support your goals.

Understanding ATAR Scaling in WA

Scaling adjusts your raw exam marks to account for the difficulty of each subject and the strength of the cohort taking it. In simple terms, a score of 70 in a heavily-scaled subject like Maths Methods may contribute more to your ATAR than a 75 in a subject with lower scaling.

This doesn’t mean you should chase scaled subjects you’ll struggle in. A strong mark in a lower-scaled subject almost always beats a weak mark in a harder one. The sweet spot is subjects where you can realistically achieve high raw marks and benefit from reasonable scaling.

The Core Decision: Which Maths?

For most STEM-bound students, the maths choice is the biggest decision. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Maths Specialist: The most rigorous option, covering complex numbers, vectors, and proof. Required or recommended for engineering, physics, and advanced science degrees. Pairs with Maths Methods.
  • Maths Methods: Covers calculus, probability, and statistics. The standard prerequisite for most STEM university courses. Strong scaling.
  • Maths Applications: Focuses on financial maths, networks, and applied statistics. Suitable for business, social sciences, and health sciences pathways.

Building a Balanced Combination

Consider workload balance too. Subjects like Chemistry and Physics both have intensive practical components. Pairing them with essay-heavy subjects like English Literature creates a varied workload, but it also means very different types of study. Make sure you have the time and energy for all of them.

Check University Prerequisites Early

Before finalising your subjects, look up the prerequisites for your target university courses on the TISC website. Some courses have strict subject requirements (e.g., Engineering at UWA requires Maths Methods and Physics), while others are more flexible.

Don’t assume — check directly. Prerequisites can change year to year, and missing one can close a door you didn’t know was there.

The best subject combination is the one where you can score highly in every subject while meeting your university prerequisites. There’s no universally “best” list.
