The year maths stops being arithmetic and starts being mathematics.

Year 9 is where the subject genuinely changes shape. Trigonometry, similar figures, gradient and the Cartesian plane, quadratics, scientific notation and simple interest all arrive this year — and they don’t replace earlier content, they sit directly on top of it. A shaky grip on fractions or index laws from Year 8 doesn’t just linger, it actively blocks the new material. In Science, the shift is just as real: atomic structure, balanced chemical equations, wave models of light and sound, and ecosystem-level thinking about adaptation and population change all demand a more abstract, model-based way of reasoning than Year 8 asked for.

It’s also the year that quietly sets up WACE pathway choices. The trigonometry, algebra and statistical reasoning a student is comfortable with by the end of Year 9 has a real bearing on which Year 11 maths and science pathway feels achievable. Our Year 9 program is built to take that seriously: each term’s tutoring is mapped to what’s actually being taught in WA classrooms that term, so sessions consolidate and extend school learning rather than running on a parallel track that never quite lines up.

Either works. Many families start with one subject and add the second once they see how sessions run. Each subject is tutored separately so the focus stays sharp.
