How to Choose a Tutor in Perth (and What Tutoring Costs in 2026)

There are hundreds of tutors and tutoring centres across Perth, from university students advertising online to large national franchises. Prices vary a lot, and so does quality. This guide explains the main types of tutoring, what they typically cost in 2026, and the questions worth asking before you sign up.

Types of tutoring

One-on-one tutoring

A tutor works with one student, in person or online. It is the most personalised option and suits students with specific gaps, learning needs, or exam goals such as ATAR or selective-school entry. It is also the most expensive per hour.

Small-group tutoring

Typically three to eight students with one tutor. Good small groups follow a clear plan, keep numbers low enough for individual help, and let students learn from each other’s questions. The cost per hour is lower, which makes weekly tutoring across a full term more affordable.

Large classes and online platforms

Some providers run larger classes or self-paced online programs. These can be useful for revision or extension, but offer less individual attention.

What tutoring costs in Perth

Prices depend on the tutor’s experience, the year level and the format. As a general guide:

  • Small-group classes: commonly around $30–$60 per student per hour.
  • One-on-one with a university student or recent graduate: commonly around $50–$100 per hour.
  • One-on-one with an experienced or teacher-trained tutor: the Australian Tutoring Association reports around $55–$180 per hour, with senior secondary and specialist subjects at the higher end.

Many centres charge per term rather than per session. When you compare, work out the cost per hour of teaching and check what is included: materials, assessments, progress reports and make-up classes for missed sessions.

For reference, EduLift’s current fees are $300 per term for one subject in Years 1–6 ($550 for Maths and English together), $400 per term for one subject in Years 7–9, and $500 per subject per term for Years 11–12 ATAR, in groups of up to six. One-on-one sessions are $60 per hour for Years 7–10 and $75 per hour for Years 11–12, GATE and NAPLAN. See the FAQs for full details.

Seven questions to ask before you choose

  1. Does the tutor have a current Working with Children Check? In WA, paid coaching and private tuition is child-related work, so tutors generally need a valid WWC Check. Ask to see it.
  2. Is the program aligned to the WA curriculum? WA schools follow the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) curriculum. Programs built for other states can teach topics in a different order or miss WA-specific content.
  3. How big are the groups? Ask for the maximum class size, not the average.
  4. How will you track progress? Look for an initial assessment, regular checks and updates you can actually understand.
  5. What happens if my child misses a class? Ask about make-up sessions, credits and notice periods.
  6. Can we try before committing? A free trial class is the best way to see whether your child connects with the tutor and the teaching style.
  7. What are the payment and cancellation terms? Check whether you pay per term or per session, and what happens if you need to stop.

Red flags to watch for

  • Guaranteed ATAR scores or selective-school places. No one can promise these.
  • Long lock-in contracts before a trial.
  • No clear plan for what will be taught each term.
  • Homework-help only, with no work on underlying gaps.
