The bridge year, where every WACE pathway either firms up or falls apart.

Year 10 is the last full year before WACE subject selection, and the content reflects that. In Mathematics, index laws extend to negative indices, quadratics get factorised and graphed, simultaneous equations and inequalities are solved both graphically and algebraically, and trigonometry moves into angles of elevation and depression and similar triangles. Income tax and compound interest bring real financial mathematics into play. None of this is new territory exactly — it’s last year’s foundations, but applied with far less scaffolding and far more independent reasoning expected.

Science follows the same pattern. Students move from genes and Punnett squares into the theory of evolution by natural selection, build a working model of ionic and covalent bonding from the periodic table, study the formation of stars and galaxies, and apply Newton’s laws and the conservation of energy to real systems. These are the exact topics that Year 11 Chemistry, Physics and Biology assume a student already has — so gaps here don’t stay contained to Year 10, they surface again at ATAR level.
