What is NAPLAN?
The National Literacy & Numeracy Check-In
The National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for all Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It measures foundational skills in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy against national standards.
NAPLAN is not a pass-or-fail exam — it’s a diagnostic snapshot that helps teachers, schools and parents understand where a student is tracking and where they may need additional support. Since 2023, the test has been held in March (moved from May) so results reach families earlier in the school year.
Why it matters: NAPLAN results identify strengths and gaps early, allowing teachers and families to target support before small issues become bigger challenges. For WA students, results are managed through SCSA and typically reach parents by mid-year.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should my child start NAPLAN preparation?
We recommend starting 2–3 months before the March test window. This gives enough time to identify gaps through a diagnostic assessment and build skills progressively without creating unnecessary stress.
Is NAPLAN a pass-or-fail test?
No. NAPLAN is a diagnostic snapshot, not a pass/fail exam. Results are reported against four proficiency levels — Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs Additional Support — to show where your child is tracking against national standards. It’s best used as a tool to identify strengths and areas for targeted improvement.
What is OLNA and how does NAPLAN connect to it in WA?
The Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) is a WA requirement for WACE graduation. Students who achieve Band 8 or above (now equivalent to “Strong” or “Exceeding”) in their Year 9 NAPLAN are considered to have met the OLNA standard and don’t need to sit it separately. A strong Year 9 NAPLAN result saves your child from additional testing in Years 10–12.
Are calculators allowed in the Numeracy test?
For Years 3 and 5, no calculators are permitted. For Years 7 and 9, the Numeracy test is split into a non-calculator section and a calculator-allowed section. Students need to be confident with mental computation as well as calculator-assisted problem solving.

“Developing” means your child is making progress but hasn’t yet reached the expected standard. It’s not a cause for alarm, but it is a clear signal that targeted support in specific areas will help them get on track. We use the result alongside our own diagnostic to build a focused improvement plan.

Does my child need to practise typing for NAPLAN?
Yes, for Years 5, 7 and 9. The Writing test is completed online, and students who can type confidently spend more time on content and less time struggling with the keyboard. Year 3 students still handwrite their response on paper. We build keyboard fluency into our preparation for the relevant year levels.
Do you offer online NAPLAN preparation?
Yes. We offer both in-person tutoring across Perth’s southern suburbs (Piara Waters, Canning Vale, Harrisdale, Southern River) and online sessions for families who prefer remote learning. Both options follow the same structured, curriculum-aligned program.
