Year 4 Written Addition — No Regrouping Worksheet
Add two 4-digit numbers with the column method (no regrouping) across 29 fluency, core, reasoning and challenge questions, plus a full answer key.
What's covered
- Adding two 4-digit numbers using the column method
- Lining up digits correctly by place value (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands)
- Recognising when an addition needs no regrouping
About this worksheet
Column addition is one of the first formal written methods students meet, and getting comfortable with it when no carrying is involved builds the confidence and accuracy needed before regrouping is introduced. A secure grasp of lining up digits by place value also pays off in subtraction, multiplication and everyday money calculations.
This worksheet follows EduLift’s standard four-part structure. The 16 fluency questions give students repeated practice adding pairs of 4-digit numbers column by column, with every example chosen so no column reaches 10 or more. The 6 core questions apply the skill to real-world contexts such as fundraising totals, ticket sales and parcel deliveries, including two-part problems that combine addition with a simple comparison or subtraction step. The 4 reasoning questions ask students to explain what ‘no regrouping’ means and to justify why the written method always starts with the ones column. Finally, the 3 challenge questions extend the skill with digit-placement puzzles and a question about the largest possible no-regrouping sum using a limited set of digits.
Every question and worked solution has been hand-checked for accuracy, and a full worked answer key is provided as a separate download, with clear marking guidance for the multi-step and reasoning questions.
This worksheet is aligned to the WA Curriculum code WA4MNAAS1 and is free to download for personal and classroom use.
Common errors we see in tutoring
- Misaligning digits by place value when numbers have a different number of digits
- Adding columns in the wrong order instead of starting from the ones column
- Forgetting to bring down a digit when one number is shorter than the other
- Confusing addition with subtraction when reading a word problem
