About this worksheet
Rounding is one of the most practical number skills a Year 4 student can build — it’s what makes mental estimation possible and what stops small arithmetic slips from going unnoticed. This worksheet gives students focused, structured practice rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, and beyond, working from simple two-digit numbers right up through numbers in the hundreds of thousands.
The worksheet follows our usual four-part structure. The Fluency section (16 questions) steps students through rounding to the nearest 10, then 100, then 1,000, before finishing with trickier cases — including the “round half up” convention at exact midpoints (like 9,950) and rounding very large numbers to the nearest 10,000 or 100,000. The Core section applies rounding to real contexts: school enrolments, charity totals, stadium attendance, and working out which numbers fall within a given rounded range. The Reasoning section asks students to explain their thinking — why we look at the digit immediately to the right of the rounding place, why 2,500 and 2,499 round differently despite being only 1 apart, and to check a worked example for errors. The Challenge section pushes further, asking students to find the smallest and largest numbers that round to a given value, and to reason about numbers that satisfy two rounding conditions at once.
Every question has been checked by hand, including the trickier edge cases around exact midpoints, so teachers and parents can rely on the answer key without needing to re-verify the mathematics. A full, fully worked marking key is included as a separate download, with mark allocations shown for every question.
This worksheet aligns with the WA Year 4 curriculum descriptor WA4MNAPV1 and is free to download and use in the classroom or at home.
Common errors we see in tutoring
- Looking at the wrong digit when deciding whether to round up or down
- Not setting all digits to the right of the rounding place to zero
- Confusing an exact-midpoint number (e.g. 9,950) with a number that rounds down
