Year 4 Ordering & Comparing Numbers Worksheet
Compare and order 4- and 5-digit numbers with 29 fluency, core, reasoning and challenge questions, plus a full answer key.
What's covered
- Comparing 4- and 5-digit numbers using < and > symbols
- Ordering lists of numbers from smallest to largest and largest to smallest
- Using place value to justify which of two numbers is bigger
About this worksheet
Being able to quickly tell which of two numbers is larger — and put a list of numbers in the right order — is one of the quiet foundations of all later maths, from measurement and money to algebra. Without a secure sense of number order, even straightforward tasks like reading a number line, ranking scores, or checking whether an answer is sensible become much harder than they need to be.
This worksheet follows EduLift’s standard four-part structure. The 16 fluency questions give students quick practice comparing pairs of numbers using < and > symbols, building speed and confidence with 4- and 5-digit numbers. The 6 core questions apply this skill to real-world contexts such as ordering distances, prices and scores, including two-part problems that ask students to order a list and then explain their reasoning. The 4 reasoning questions ask students to justify how place value determines which number is bigger and to spot and correct a common ordering mistake. Finally, the 3 challenge questions extend the skill with multi-step number puzzles involving digit constraints and ordering with missing digits.
Every question and worked solution has been hand-checked for accuracy, and a full worked answer key is provided as a separate download, with clear marking guidance for the multi-step and reasoning questions.
This worksheet is aligned to the WA Curriculum code WA4MNAPV1 and is free to download for personal and classroom use.
Common errors we see in tutoring
- Comparing only the first digit instead of checking place value column by column
- Misreading the < and > symbols and reversing the comparison
- Losing track of digits when ordering numbers with a different number of digits
- Assuming a longer number is always bigger, even when leading zeros are involved
Answer key (with worked solutions)
