About this worksheet

Finding a fraction of a quantity — like 3/4 of 24 — brings together division and multiplication in a single two-step process, and it’s a skill students use constantly in real-world maths, from recipes to money to sharing. This worksheet gives students structured practice with the “divide then multiply” method, building from single-step fluency through to layered, multi-step word problems.

The worksheet follows EduLift’s standard four-part structure. It opens with 16 fluency questions finding a fraction of a given quantity. Six core questions apply the skill to real contexts — excursions, farm animals, musical instruments and garden plants — several requiring a second step after finding the fraction. Four reasoning questions ask students to explain the two-step method, correct a common misconception about step order, and evaluate a general claim about fractions always making a quantity smaller. Three challenge questions ask students to work backwards from a known fraction to find the whole, and to solve a multi-step practical problem.

Every question and worked solution has been hand-checked for accuracy, and a full worked answer key is provided as a separate download, with clear marking guidance for the multi-step word and reasoning questions.

This worksheet is aligned to the WA Curriculum code WA4MNAFR1 and is free to download for personal and classroom use.

Common errors we see in tutoring

  • Multiplying by the numerator before dividing by the denominator (wrong order)
  • Dividing by the numerator instead of the denominator
  • Forgetting to complete the second step in multi-step word problems
  • Mixing up which quantity (the part or the whole) the question is asking for
Answer key (with worked solutions)

The answer key is a separate PDF with every question worked, not just the final answers.
