About this worksheet

This free Year 4 expanded notation and partitioning worksheet is written for the Western Australian curriculum and mapped to SCSA content description WA4MNAPV1. It targets one specific skill: breaking whole numbers apart into the value of each digit (expanded notation), and rebuilding numbers from their place value parts, to at least 100,000.

The worksheet opens with a Key idea box that walks through how to split a number into its place value parts and why digits of zero are usually left out, before students move into four levelled sections. Fluency (16 marks) practises the skill directly: partitioning numbers into expanded form and rebuilding numerals from an expanded form. Core (21 marks) applies the same skill to short worded contexts such as fundraising totals and library stock. Reasoning (9 marks) asks students to explain, justify or spot an error, building the mathematical communication skills WA classrooms expect. Challenge (7 marks) is multi-step and problem-solving, for students who finish early or want extension.

Every question includes working space, and Core and Challenge questions carry a separate answer line, so the sheet works equally well as independent practice, homework, or a quick in-class check. A full answer key with worked solutions is available as a free download alongside the worksheet.

Common errors we see in tutoring

  • Writing a 'hundreds' or 'tens' term when that digit is actually 0
  • Misreading a digit's place (e.g. treating a tens digit as hundreds)
  • Dropping a place value part entirely when adding the expanded form back up
Answer key (with worked solutions)

The answer key is a separate PDF with every question worked, not just the final answers.
