About this worksheet

Estimating is a skill students use constantly, whether they’re checking that a calculator answer is sensible, planning a budget, or working out roughly how much time or material a task will need. Rounding numbers before adding or subtracting gives a fast, reliable way to sanity-check an exact calculation — and it’s a skill that gets easier with practice.

This worksheet follows EduLift’s standard four-part structure. The 16 fluency questions give students repeated practice rounding pairs of 4-digit numbers to the nearest 100 and then adding or subtracting the rounded values. The 6 core questions apply this skill to real-world contexts such as event attendance, shipments and fundraising totals, including two-part problems that ask students to use their estimate to make a decision. The 4 reasoning questions ask students to explain why estimating is useful, spot a rounding mistake, and discuss why an estimate won’t always match the exact answer. Finally, the 3 challenge questions extend the skill with reverse-rounding puzzles and a comparison between rounding to the nearest 100 and the nearest 1,000.

Every question and worked solution has been hand-checked for accuracy, and a full worked answer key is provided as a separate download, with clear marking guidance for the multi-step and reasoning questions.

This worksheet is aligned to the WA Curriculum code WA4MNAAS1 and is free to download for personal and classroom use.

Common errors we see in tutoring

  • Rounding down when the tens digit calls for rounding up (or vice versa)
  • Forgetting to round both numbers before adding or subtracting
  • Treating the estimate as the final answer instead of a sensibility check
  • Rounding to the wrong place value (e.g. nearest 10 instead of nearest 100)
