About this worksheet

Reading and converting between 12-hour (am/pm) and 24-hour time is an essential life skill that Year 4 students practise through timetables, schedules and everyday routines. This worksheet gives students focused practice converting times in both directions.

The worksheet follows EduLift’s four-part structure, with 29 questions worth 53 marks in total. The Fluency section (16 marks) has students convert 12-hour times, including am, pm, noon and midnight, into 24-hour notation. The Core section (21 marks) applies this skill to real-world contexts such as movies, flights, shop hours and library closing times, including two-part questions that interpret what a converted time means. The Reasoning section (9 marks) asks students to explain the conversion rule, justify the special cases of noon and midnight, and correct a common student error. The Challenge section (7 marks) extends students with reverse conversions and multi-step timing problems.

Every question and answer on this worksheet has been checked for accuracy, and the worksheet has been reviewed for clear layout and age-appropriate language before publishing.

This worksheet is aligned to the WA SCSA Mathematics curriculum for Year 4, under the Measurement and Geometry strand (code WA4MMGTI1), and is free to download and use for classroom or home practice.

Common errors we see in tutoring

  • Forgetting to add 12 hours when converting a pm time
  • Converting midnight (12:00am) incorrectly as 12:00 instead of 00:00
  • Mixing up am and pm when converting back to 12-hour time
  • Misreading a 24-hour time close to midnight or midday
