Year 4 2-Digit × 1-Digit Multiplication — With Regrouping Worksheet
29 column-multiplication questions for Year 4, every one requiring regrouping, with applied problems and a full worked answer key.
What's covered
- Multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number using the column method
- Regrouping (carrying) correctly from the ones column into the tens or hundreds
- Applying column multiplication to solve one- and two-step word problems
About this worksheet
Multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number is one of the key written methods Year 4 students need to master, and most real problems involve regrouping (carrying) at some point. This worksheet gives focused practice at the formal column method, building the speed and accuracy students need before moving on to 3-digit multiplication in later years.
The worksheet follows EduLift’s standard four-part structure. It opens with 16 fluency questions, each requiring regrouping in the ones column, so students get repeated practice with the “carry” step that typically causes errors. Six core questions apply column multiplication to real-world word problems — buying, packing and production scenarios that often require a second step after the multiplication. Four reasoning questions ask students to explain why regrouping happens, use partitioning as an alternative strategy, spot a worked-example mistake using estimation, and evaluate a general claim about 2-digit multiplication. Three challenge questions ask students to work backwards from a product or compare two multi-step scenarios.
Every question and worked solution has been hand-checked for accuracy, and a full worked answer key is provided as a separate download, with clear marking guidance for the multi-step word and reasoning questions.
This worksheet is aligned to the WA Curriculum code WA4MNAMU2 and is free to download for personal and classroom use.
Common errors we see in tutoring
- Forgetting to carry (regroup) into the next column, or carrying the wrong amount
- Adding the carried digit before multiplying, instead of after
- Misreading or misaligning digits in the ones and tens columns when setting out the problem
- Stopping after the first step in a two-step word problem instead of completing it
