About this worksheet

Multiplying a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number is a key milestone in Year 4 maths, building directly on the 2-digit multiplication skills students have already mastered. This worksheet gives students focused practice with the column method, including carrying (regrouping) across the ones, tens and hundreds columns, so they can multiply confidently and accurately.

The worksheet follows EduLift’s four-part structure, with 29 questions worth 53 marks in total. The Fluency section (16 marks) has students multiply 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using the column method, with a mix of calculations that do and don’t require carrying. The Core section (21 marks) applies this skill to real-world word problems involving warehouses, theatres, bakeries and charities, including two-part questions that combine multiplication with addition or subtraction. The Reasoning section (9 marks) asks students to explain why carrying is sometimes needed, justify the standard column method, and evaluate a true/false claim about the size of possible answers. The Challenge section (7 marks) extends students with inverse operation puzzles and multiple valid solution problems.

Every question and answer on this worksheet has been checked for accuracy, and the worksheet has been reviewed for clear layout and age-appropriate language before publishing.

This worksheet is aligned to the WA SCSA Mathematics curriculum for Year 4, under the Number and Algebra strand (code WA4MNAMU2), and is free to download and use for classroom or home practice.

Common errors we see in tutoring

  • Forgetting to carry a regrouped digit into the next column
  • Adding the carried digit after multiplying instead of before
  • Misaligning place value columns when multiplying larger numbers
  • Stopping after two columns and omitting the hundreds digit
