Year 4 Equivalent Fractions Worksheet
Free Year 4 worksheet on equivalent fractions — generating and recognising equivalent fractions by scaling numerator and denominator, aligned to WA4MNAFR1.
What's covered
- Generating equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing numerator and denominator by the same number
- Simplifying fractions to their simplest form
- Identifying equivalent and non-equivalent fractions, including in applied contexts
About this worksheet
Equivalent fractions — recognising that 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8 all name the same amount — is one of the most important ideas in Year 4 fractions, and the gateway skill for comparing fractions, adding fractions and simplifying later on. This worksheet gives students focused practice generating and recognising equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.
The worksheet follows EduLift’s standard four-part structure. It opens with 16 fluency questions finding missing numerators or denominators to complete an equivalent pair. Six core questions apply the skill to real contexts — pizza slices, recipes, simplifying fractions and identifying a non-equivalent fraction from a group. Four reasoning questions ask students to explain why equivalent fractions represent the same amount, correct a common misconception about multiplying only one part of a fraction, and evaluate a general claim about fraction size. Three challenge questions ask students to find fractions within a denominator range, solve for an unknown numerator or denominator, and judge two students’ competing equivalence claims.
Every question and worked solution has been hand-checked for accuracy, and a full worked answer key is provided as a separate download, with clear marking guidance for the multi-step and reasoning questions.
This worksheet is aligned to the WA Curriculum code WA4MNAFR1 and is free to download for personal and classroom use.
Common errors we see in tutoring
- Multiplying or dividing only the numerator or only the denominator, not both
- Using a different scale factor for the numerator and denominator
- Not simplifying fully (stopping at a fraction that can still be reduced further)
- Assuming a fraction with bigger numbers is automatically a bigger value
Answer key (with worked solutions)
The answer key is a separate PDF with every question worked, not just the final answers.
