Choosing your Year 11 and Year 12 mathematics subjects is an important decision. Maths Methods and Maths Specialist are both ATAR mathematics courses in the Western Australian SCSA curriculum, but they have different purposes, content and levels of difficulty.

Specialist can also provide stronger preparation for mathematically demanding university study.
It is not universally required for engineering. At UWA, Specialist is one of three supporting prerequisite options alongside Chemistry and Physics. At Curtin, Specialist is currently identified as a desirable rather than essential subject for its Bachelor of Engineering.

Is Maths Specialist Harder Than Maths Methods?
For most students, Maths Specialist is more challenging.
Methods already requires students to understand calculus, functions, probability and statistics. Specialist adds more abstract concepts and often requires greater confidence with reasoning, proof and unfamiliar problem-solving.
However, difficulty is personal. A student who enjoys abstract mathematics may find Specialist highly rewarding, while another student may achieve a stronger overall ATAR by focusing on Methods and their other subjects.
What About ATAR Scaling?
Students should not choose a subject purely because they have heard that it “scales well.”
Scaling can change between years and depends on the performance of the statewide student cohort. Your final result will still depend heavily on how well you understand the course and perform in assessments and examinations.
A strong result in an appropriate subject is usually more valuable than selecting a harder course solely because of its perceived scaling.

If mathematics is primarily a prerequisite or supporting tool for your future course, Methods alone may be the more strategic choice.

Consider how this workload will fit alongside subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, English and your other ATAR courses.
