Gifted and Talented Education in WA

Western Australia’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program provides specialised educational opportunities for academically exceptional students through placement in selective secondary school programs. Entry is determined by the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET), designed and administered by ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research).

The ASET is held each March for Year 7 entry the following year, with late-entry pathways available for Years 9–11 at select schools. The test assesses cognitive abilities and reasoning potential rather than curriculum knowledge, making targeted preparation essential.

Key fact: Applications for GATE programs have increased by over 30% in recent years. With only around one-third of applicants receiving an offer, thorough and early preparation gives your child the best chance of success.

What score does my child need for Perth Modern School?

The 2026 cut-off for Perth Modern School was a TSS of 244.34. Cut-offs vary each year based on the applicant pool. We recommend targeting 247+ during preparation to provide a comfortable margin.

Is coaching really necessary for the GATE exam?

The Department of Education states that coaching is not necessary. However, the ASET assesses skills that are quite different from everyday schoolwork — particularly abstract reasoning and timed writing. Structured preparation helps students become familiar with the test format, develop time management strategies, and build confidence under exam conditions.

What if my child doesn't get into Perth Modern?

Perth Modern is one of 24+ schools with GATE programs. Many excellent alternatives have lower TSS requirements — from around 210 upwards. Schools like Rossmoyne, Willetton, Shenton College and Harrisdale all offer strong academic GATE programs. Your child’s ASET score determines eligibility across all listed preference schools.

Is there negative marking on the ASET?

No, there is no negative marking on the ASET. This means students should attempt every question. We teach strategic guessing techniques — using elimination to narrow options before selecting an answer — so students never leave a question blank.

Do you offer online GATE preparation?

Yes. We offer both in-person tutoring across Perth’s southern suburbs (Piara Waters, Canning Vale, Harrisdale, Southern River) and online sessions for families who prefer remote learning. Both options follow the same structured program.

Can my child join if they're in Year 4?

Yes. Starting in Year 4 gives your child an extended runway to build strong reasoning and literacy foundations before focused ASET preparation begins in Year 5. We tailor our program to match their current level.
